Last week was my ten year college reunion. I originally got the announcement in the mail a couple months ago and immediately went online and booked airline tickets. Get out of the rainy Pacific Northwest and head to San Diego in November? That's a no brainer! It was a great excuse to go to the sun, relax with the family, and get some fishing in.
November isn't quite the best time to fish around San Diego, and the day we had to fish didn't have the best tides either, but we booked a guided trip anyways. When you're on vacation and have the opportunity to fish you take the opportunity!
We fished a half day on Mission Bay with Captian Dave Trimble and had a blast. Allison and I caught several Spotted Bay Bass and I also caught a small shark. A lot of the flies we used were very similar to flies we use here in Puget Sound for sea run cutthroat.
If you find yourself in San Diego with a half day to spare, look up Captain Dave Trimble with On the Fly Saltwater Fishing. He was a lot of fun to fish with and really knows his stuff. He is also really into shark fishing so if you want to try to catch a shark on the fly, he's your guy. If Dave is booked, another guy I would recommend is Peter Piconi. Peter owns a fly shop in San Diego and does a lot of guiding on San Diego bay. I had a chance to meet Peter and talk with him at length and look forward to getting out on the water with him in the future.
Here's some pictures from last week's adventure.
