We have talked some in the past about one of our favorite beach lines, the Wulff Ambush line. Even though it started out as a niche line, this shooting head style line excels in a number of circumstances. Here is a rundown of the different ways we use this line, as well as the why:
Overhead casting on the beach:
The Ambush has proven to be the easiest line we have for distance casting with minimal effort. It is easy to simply pick the line up and with one false cast throw 80 ft or more of line. The Ambush is great for beginners because the short head length makes picking the line up off the water easy, while its relatively heavy weight loads the rod deep and penetrates well in the wind. More experienced casters favor this line as well because of the minimal effort it requires to make fishable casts and the versatility it allows.
Single Hand Spey Casting:
The original design of this line was for just this. Using spey casting techniques with a single hand rod. Why do this? It works great in tight situations like brushy creeks where there is no room for a backcast. Or my favorite is high tide on the beach, when everyone else has left because of a lack of casting room, and you are still out there spey casting 70 ft of line and catching fish!
Swinging flies with a single hand rod for river steelhead and salmon:
Haven't pulled the plug on a spey rod yet? Well this line will let you make the same casts and presentation as with a spey rod. Matched up with a variety of sink rate poly leaders and or sink tips, this line can swing flies on a single hander just like a spey rod. This is a great line to take to Alaska and cover all the situations you might run into from shallow estuary coho to kings in the super deep runs.
And of course swinging flies on spey rods:
This short skagit style line works best on rods 13' and under. It has the power to turn over the biggest of flies and heaviest of sinktips. Available as a full line or just a head, where you can pick the running line of your choice. I like the head with the Scientific Anglers Floating Mono for this application.
