Chum Fry & The Sea Run Cutthroat

Every Spring, millions of chum fry migrate out of the small creeks of Hood Canal and Puget sound and represent a major food source for Sea Run Cutthroat. This fry hatch usually brings about a big improvementt in fishing quality as we move from the slowest cutthroat fishing period of the year into what can be some of the most productive fishing. Recent observations around southern Puget Sound have shown that this has begun!
Colton caught this Chum Fry on a size 40 plankton imitation!

Adult chum salmon spawn from late October through Mid December. The outmigration of the fry in the spring varies accordingly to these spawning times and weather conditions throughout the winter. The earliest migrations begin in mid march with fry being present until sometime in May. Throughout this period, chum fry will represent a major if not the critical food source for the cutthroat. Accordingly, they should be a major if not key fly in your fly box.
Two productive chum fry patterns.

Saavy fisherman follow the migration of these fry beginning in March fishing closet to the creeks with early chum runs and then expanding throughout the Sound and following the fry as they move north out of the Sound in May. They know that any time chum fry are present, cutthroat will be on the feed as they recover from their own spawning migrations. A couple of productive local beaches for fishing the chum fry hatch include Purdy and Olalla, but if you have your own secret Chum creeks, nearby beaches are a strong bet for productive spring cutthroat. Regardless, anywhere you fish this spring in the salt, make sure you have a few Chum Fry imitations in your box!

Fly Fishing Travel

Patagonia ...Sea Run Browns await
Fly Fisherman love to travel. To me, thats one of the greatest things about fly fishing. It can take you to the greatest places on earth. You will see and experience things most people never get the chance to. Here is my list of places that I will do anything, even crawl or swim to reach:

1.Patagonia.
I was fortunate enough to go once. Returning still tops everything else. The food, people, and fish all make this place hard to beat.
2.Christmas Island
Giant Trevally make me lose sleep. Dreams of 60lb Jacks eating giant top water flies within a rod length and then burning up drags haunt my nights. Tons of bonefish wouldn’t be terrible either.
3. BC Steelhead
A Dean River Float and fishing the Skeena system makes the short list. Some of the biggest baddest steelhead matched with incredible scenery is means this is a must do if you call yourself a steelhead addict.
4.New Zealand
Do you like sight fishing to giant brown trout with equally large dry flies? I do.
5. Florida Keys Tarpon and Permit
Sight fishing to big, challenging fish, domestic location. Very difficult means very rewarding. Have you ever seen the Chasing Silver dvd’s?
6.Baja Roosterfish and Tuna
Shop trip this September. Very affordable and easy to get to. Roosterfish rushing your fly on the beach are amazing beyond words. Ask us for trip details.
7. Scotland Atlantic Salmon
Ive just got to visit the place where spey casting began!
8.Seychelles
Similar to Christmas Island, harder to get to. Big bonefish, big trevally, warm weather.
9. Alaska fall steelhead.
Some of the remotest, most barren places on earth. With steelhead just as raw and beautiful.
10. Bolivian dorado.
Big aggressive fish in the jungle. That’s got to be fun.

We work closely with Flywater Travel Co. If there is something on here or elsewhere that you are interested in, talk to us and we would be glad to help you get setup with a very reputable lodge/guide at locations all over the globe.

Cant do something exotic? Olympic Peninsula steelhead are world class and close to home...now is prime time...see us for a guide trip.
